Fiji’s Future at Stake: Can Unity Overcome Divisions?

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to rise above party divisions and work collaboratively to develop a new constitution that genuinely reflects democracy, justice, and unity for the nation. As the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025 is slated for debate, Rabuka emphasized its importance in shaping the future of governance and the lives of the Fijian populace.

In his statements, Rabuka articulated that for a constitution to be considered legitimate, it must align with the will of the people and encompass their dignity and aspirations for the future—something he believes is currently lacking in the existing 2013 Constitution. He urged that democracy is best served through reasoned discussion, inclusion, and mutual respect among representatives.

The proposed amendments are designed to modernize the constitutional amendment process, simplifying the language in Chapter 11 of the constitution and lowering the threshold required for changes from three-quarters to two-thirds of parliamentary approval, while also eliminating the need for a nationwide referendum.

Rabuka’s vision includes fostering a constitutional framework that can adapt to the evolving needs of the Fijian society, ensuring that democracy thrives through active participation of all citizens. He highlighted the necessity of creating a constitution that resonates with Fiji’s diverse multi-ethnic and multicultural makeup, particularly through open dialogue.

This reform effort not only aims to rectify past issues of civic participation but also presents an opportunity for fostering unity and collaboration within the diverse communities of Fiji, which has faced challenges similar to those observed globally regarding divisions.

Despite the hurdles in obtaining the necessary votes (currently short by four), Rabuka maintains a hopeful outlook. He perceives these challenges not merely as obstacles but as chances for meaningful engagement across the political spectrum, which could ultimately lead to a more inclusive governance structure.

Overall, Prime Minister Rabuka’s commitment to dialogue, inclusivity, and reform positions Fiji on an optimistic path toward enhancing its democratic framework and unifying its people.
