As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to fulfilling its duties as per the established Act. She emphasized FICAC’s role in protecting Fijians from corruption through diligent investigation, prosecution, and, crucially, public education.

Malimali highlighted that corruption can weaken democratic institutions and erode trust in governance. She compared corruption to a parasite that disrupts and damages societal systems. FICAC’s work is vital in promoting the principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability, which are essential components aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals.

In her address, she urged the community and stakeholders to join FICAC in its efforts, encouraging everyone to report any corruption-related activities. “We plead with the people and our stakeholders to work with us and report any corruption-related activity to FICAC,” Malimali stated.

This year’s theme for International Anti-Corruption Day is “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society,” highlighting the collective responsibility in the fight against corruption.

This commitment from FICAC is a promising sign for the future of governance in Fiji. With the public’s support and increased awareness, there is potential for significant progress in combating corruption and fostering a culture of integrity within the community.
