Farmers in Fiji’s Central and Western Divisions have gained valuable insights into sheep and goat farming during the Small Ruminant Farming Practices Field Day at the Nawaicoba Research Station in Nadi. This event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways and featured involvement from visiting U.S. Army veterinarians from the 72nd Medical Detachment under the Pacific Partnership 2025 initiative.

The U.S. Army team provided hands-on training in critical areas such as animal health, disease prevention, nutrition, and sustainable farming practices. Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, expressed appreciation for this collaboration, noting its significance in enhancing Fiji’s livestock productivity and food security. “This partnership reflects the strength of Fiji and the United States working together to build a more resilient agricultural sector,” Tunabuna remarked. He emphasized the importance of new knowledge for farmers to improve livestock management and reduce losses, which is vital for community food security.

The field day is part of ongoing efforts under the Pacific Partnership 2025 to bolster disaster preparedness and agricultural resilience throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Captain Levi Jackson from the U.S. Navy reiterated the necessity of such training in small ruminant farming to ensure long-term sustainability in agriculture.

This initiative resonates with recent government endeavors in Fiji that focus on enhancing agricultural practices and supporting livestock management. Similar training sessions, like those for dairy farmers and other agricultural sectors, aim to empower local agricultural communities through education and practical skills. Enhanced training not only improves livelihoods but also significantly contributes to national food security and sustainable farming.

With these initiatives, the outlook for Fiji’s agricultural landscape remains hopeful, paving the way for a future where farmers are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to thrive. The collective commitment to agriculture reflects a bright path towards improving the country’s livestock sector and ensuring food security for all communities.
