With the 2026 General Election on the horizon, the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has initiated the destruction of sensitive materials related to the 2022 elections. This proactive measure is aimed at enhancing the security and confidentiality of electoral documents, thereby bolstering public trust in the electoral system.
The disposal process includes over 2,000 ballot boxes from the Central Division, which will be carefully handled by election officials. Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa, noted that the first step in the process involves checking and documenting the seals on these boxes, followed by the meticulous removal of sensitive materials such as past ballot papers.
Additionally, it was emphasized that some of these materials will undergo recycling, reflecting the FEO’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. The Sensitive Materials Destruction Project is expected to commence within the next five weeks.
This initiative comes in the wake of issues experienced during the 2022 elections, notably technical glitches that raised questions about vote count accuracy. These concerns have led to demands for thorough investigations and updates from government officials. As the FEO prepares for the upcoming elections, it is clear that efforts to destroy outdated materials and uphold transparency are part of a broader strategy to ensure a more credible electoral process in Fiji.
The ongoing reforms present an optimistic outlook for future elections, as past challenges serve as catalysts for positive change and greater public involvement. The measures being taken now signify a commitment to building a more dependable electoral framework in Fiji.
