FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group as a weak trough of low pressure brings cloud, frequent showers and rain through to later tomorrow. A northerly wind flow continues to prevail across the islands, and while many places will see fine spells, showers will become more frequent and heavier later today.

Showers are expected to increase to more persistent rain later, with isolated heavy falls possible. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, so residents in vulnerable locations should take appropriate precautions. Rain should begin easing over most places Wednesday night. Winds are forecast to be moderate northerlies, but gusty conditions may accompany areas of heavy rain. Seas are expected to remain moderate.

Looking ahead to Thursday, cloudy periods with some showers are likely over Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri, Ra–Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, eastern Macuata and Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere conditions will generally be fine apart from the usual afternoon or evening showers and the possibility of thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls. Winds will shift to moderate to fresh easterlies and seas may become moderate to rough in places.

Local forecasts for the main centres reflect the same pattern: Navua, Suva and Nausori can expect mostly fine weather with brief showers, but afternoon and evening thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely (min 23°C, max 31°C). Nadi, Lautoka and Ba similarly will be fine apart from brief showers with heavy afternoon or evening storms possible (min 23°C, max 30°C). Labasa is expected to be mainly fine with brief showers and heavy afternoon or evening storms possible (min 22°C, max 32°C). Yasawa and Mamanuca islands, Sigatoka and the Coral Coast, Tavua and Rakiraki, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti generally follow the same pattern with highest temperatures around 30–31°C. Kadavu can expect some showers with thunderstorms and heavy falls (min 23°C, max 30°C).

Rotuma remains under an east to northeast wind flow with a weak trough expected to affect the island from the east later today. Occasional showers, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms are forecast (min 25°C, max 32°C), with some showers likely to continue into Thursday.
