Beyond the headline

Ratu Kadavulevu School will contest the semi-finals in all three grades of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition this weekend in Lautoka, a milestone vice principal Sailosi Koroibola says reflects more than sporting success. The achievement, he told reporters, is evidence of the school's long-term focus on shaping well-rounded young men through rugby league.

“Beyond winning, we want our boys to become respectful, responsible young men with strong values,” Koroibola said, stressing that the programme at RKS is designed to develop students “spiritually, academically, physically and socially.” He described the game as a platform for teaching life skills as much as technique and tactics.

Koroibola said rugby has helped students learn how to handle pressure, manage time and work together, while strengthening the sense of brotherhood across the school. “The game teaches them how to handle pressure, manage time and work together. It also strengthens the brotherhood within the school,” he said, pointing to the holistic benefits coaches and teachers aim to instil alongside competitive preparation.

Despite the blanket semi-final presence, RKS has kept expectations measured. “We are confident, not in ourselves alone, but in the preparation the boys have put in and the values they stand for,” Koroibola said, underlining a philosophy that prizes character and teamwork over results alone.

He also paid tribute to the contributions of the wider RKS community, including parents, teachers, coaches and old scholars, describing the semi-final appearances as built on “the foundation laid by those who came before us.” The vice principal invited the entire RKS family to rally behind the teams in Lautoka, saying supporters’ presence and prayers would be significant for the players.

As the teams travel to Lautoka for what Koroibola called their “biggest test this weekend,” the school hopes to translate its preparation and values into on-field performance. For RKS, the latest development in their season is being framed not merely as a chase for trophies but as an extension of the school’s wider mission to prepare young men for life beyond the scoreboard.
