A Brighter Future: Water Supply Solutions on the Horizon for Fiji's Central Division

Water Woes: Will Fiji’s New Initiatives Finally Quench the Thirst?

Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau has expressed confidence that the ongoing water supply challenges in the Central Division, especially in areas like Suva-Nausori, Tamavua, Khalsa, Sakoca, and Lami, will soon be resolved. Over the next 18 months, the government plans to implement both short-term and long-term measures to enhance water reliability and sustainability for residents and businesses.

Tuisawau recognized the significant inconvenience caused by service interruptions and stressed the urgency of finding solutions. The Tamavua Water Treatment Plant (WTP), originally built to handle 60 million liters per day (MLD), is currently operating at 75 MLD to meet rising demand. Immediate measures include installing a trash boom at Savura Cascade to prevent debris accumulation during heavy rains and providing two bypass pumping systems to ensure effective water flow even during high turbidity conditions.

In addition to these immediate actions, the government is moving forward with medium to long-term infrastructural projects. A significant initiative includes the construction of a $35 million pipeline from Sawani to Colo-i-Suva, set to commence in April. This project aims to alleviate pressure on the Tamavua WTP. Plans also include a new treatment facility with a capacity of 20MLD, which will increase overall capacity to 80MLD, along with improved clarifiers designed to address turbidity issues more effectively.

These infrastructure improvements not only seek to solve current challenges but are also strategically planned to accommodate future population growth. Local authorities and experts have shown optimism in these proactive measures, indicating that the goal of providing reliable access to clean water is within reach. With increased investment in water infrastructure, communities can look forward to enjoying a more consistent and dependable water supply.

The shared positive outlook among officials and residents signals a brighter future as these projects advance, potentially leading to the resolution of long-standing water issues in the Suva-Nausori corridor. The government’s commitment to enhancing critical infrastructure reflects a dedication to improving the quality of life for Fijians, fostering resilience and hope amidst ongoing challenges.
