The Fijian government, through its Ministry for Tourism and Civil Aviation, is embarking on a significant initiative aimed at promoting tourism benefits throughout all 14 provinces of the nation. Tourism currently plays a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, contributing 40% to the nation’s GDP and supporting approximately 150,000 jobs. However, much of this economic activity has historically been concentrated in just four provinces. The government is committed to shifting this balance to ensure that local communities across all regions can participate more fully in the tourism sector.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, highlighted several key initiatives designed to drive this movement forward. One of the primary initiatives is the Na Vualiku Program, which focuses on promoting sustainable tourism development specifically in Vanua Levu. This program encourages community-based tourism efforts, aiming to engage local enterprises and cultural attractions to draw visitors to areas that are often overlooked.
Gavoka emphasized the government’s objective: “Our goal is to create a more inclusive tourism sector that uplifts every community and fosters balanced regional development.” He shared that steps will be taken to improve policies, infrastructure, and sustainability measures, all aimed at leveraging the tourism industry for economic empowerment across Fiji’s provinces.

As previously noted, Fiji’s tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience, managing to recover and even flourish despite these adversities.
