Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications Manoa Kamikamica emphasized the importance of sustainability at the inauguration of Duadua Resort and its new solar power facility in Rakiraki. He stated that sustainability is not merely an option; it has become a necessity.

The Duadua Resort, owned by Latchman and Savita Gounden, will utilize the solar power plant to generate its energy, with extra power being fed into the national grid. This initiative is considered a “landmark achievement” in Fiji’s commitment to renewable energy, marking a significant step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels while promoting environmental sustainability.

Kamikamica explained that the project has enabled the establishment of Duadua Solar Energy Fiji Ltd, which has installed 182 solar panels that can produce over 600 volts of electricity and provide 100 kW of daily AC power to the resort. The solar facility is equipped with a backup capacity to ensure a stable power supply, even during nighttime.

He reassured the public of the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing renewable energy initiatives in Fiji, hinting at further announcements from the Electricity Fiji Limited (EFL) in the coming months. He highlighted Fiji’s collaborative efforts with international partners and private investors to expand solar, wind, and hydro initiatives, with an eye towards innovative fuel options like hydrogen and ethanol.

Similar sentiments were echoed during Fiji’s participation in international forums such as the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where officials called for enhanced renewable energy financing, particularly for solar projects targeting rural areas. The government has set ambitious goals to achieve over 90% of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, with a target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Overall, these developments indicate a robust commitment to sustainability in Fiji, showcasing its proactive approach in the global fight against climate change. This movement not only enhances energy security but also sets a positive example for other nations to follow, promoting a greener, more sustainable future.
