The 2025-2026 National Budget for Fiji has enthusiastically reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability by allocating $2.8 million specifically for reforestation projects targeting degraded forests. Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, emphasized that this funding will help restore biodiversity and advance the ambitious goal of planting 30 million trees over a 15-year period. Remarkably, Fiji has surpassed 60 percent of this target already, supported by improved seedling survival rates due to partnerships with local communities.

In addition, $2.5 million has been earmarked for the Commercial Maritime Pine Subsidy Project, which aims to empower maritime communities by enabling them to commercially transport certified pine logs. This initiative, in collaboration with Fiji Pine Ltd. and Tropik Wood Industries, is designed to enhance the timber harvesting process in remote areas, facilitating better transportation and market access while simultaneously promoting sustainable livelihoods.

The Fiji Pine Trust will also receive $1.7 million to fortify engagement with landowners and build expertise in the community. This holistic approach demonstrates the government’s dedication not just to reforestation, but to strengthening the timber industry’s contribution to local economies.

These initiatives reflect a growing trend in Fiji towards sustainable forestry practices, which have garnered significant investment over recent years, consistently aiming to improve both environmental and economic outcomes. The emphasis on collaboration with communities can pave the way for stronger engagement, ultimately cultivating a sense of ownership over local forest resources, which is vital in ensuring long-term success.

Overall, these initiatives signify a hopeful direction for Fiji as it not only works towards environmental resilience but also enhances community livelihoods, heralding a promising future for both the economy and the environment.
