Alice Hill, the owner of Hot Glass Fiji, is making waves in the Fijian art scene with her unique glass creations that connect deeply to her love for Fiji and its natural beauty. She participated in the “Alchemy” art exhibition at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, featuring her work alongside nine other talented local artists. The exhibition emphasizes the transformation of raw materials like glass, clay, sand, metal, and wood into extraordinary pieces of art.
Alice’s artistic inspiration draws heavily from her passion for scuba diving and the underwater world surrounding Fiji. Her glassworks reflect the vibrant flora and fauna of the ocean, marrying artistic interpretation with the natural splendor of the islands. Her pieces, including the intricate “Emperor” and “Tang,” showcase both her mastery of glassblowing and the unique textures achieved through her detailed craftsmanship.
Originally from the United Kingdom, Alice has lived in Fiji for 22 years, transitioning from running a scuba diving business to establishing her art studio in Sigatoka, where she trains five local glassblowers. She emphasizes the time, patience, and dedication required to master the art of glassblowing, a process that, while challenging, offers immense rewards and fulfillment once the skill is honed.
Alice’s art is a reflection of her environment and culture; she hopes to inspire others to connect with their heritage through her pieces. The “Alchemy” exhibition aims not only to showcase beautiful works of art but also to highlight the talents of local artists, encouraging appreciation for the skill and creativity inherent in Fijian artistry.
This initiative is particularly uplifting as it showcases local talent and fosters a sense of pride within the community. Alice expresses her hope that attendees recognize the incredible artistic capability present in Fiji and walk away with a deeper appreciation for their culture.
By highlighting the natural beauty of Fiji through her work, Alice Hill stands as a testament to the power of art to connect us to our origins and inspire future generations of artists.
