Ilimo Silomea’s journey into Australian Football League (AFL) began unexpectedly when he was invited to try the sport while walking with his cousin in Suva. Despite its lack of popularity in Fiji, Silomea found a sense of belonging through AFL, stating, “For those of us playing, it’s something we love and want to keep doing.” At just 17, he has made remarkable strides, quickly being selected to represent Fiji at the under-17 South Pacific Cup in Australia, which marked his first experience flying.

Reflecting on his training, Silomea expressed how supportive teammates and coaches made learning the sport accessible. He participated in the AFL Fiji U17 final trials at Albert Park, showcasing his skills and competing with peers who share his passion. “Everyone gave their best because we all have the same goal, to earn a spot in the team,” he shared.

Silomea’s aspirations extend beyond local competitions; he dreams of catching the eye of scouts in Australia, hoping for a scholarship opportunity. His story resembles that of fellow athletes like Kelevi Natokalau, who also trained hard to achieve representation for Fiji, emphasizing the growing interest in AFL in the country.

The enthusiasm around AFL is palpable, especially among young players, as seen in recent trials that have attracted many aspiring athletes. Loata Vakausausa, the academy manager for AFL Fiji, highlighted the program’s role in helping youth from diverse backgrounds, reflecting a positive shift in sports culture. The dedication evident in these young athletes promises not only personal growth but also nurtures a community spirit that champions participation in this evolving sport.

As AFL continues to gain traction in Fiji, Silomea’s ambition and his fellow players’ commitment highlight the hopeful future of the sport in the region, encouraging even more youth to chase their dreams through AFL.
