Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka announced that the Fijian government has allocated $2.1 million to subsidize domestic air travel for airlines servicing less profitable routes. This initiative is aimed at sustaining essential air transportation links for remote and maritime communities in Fiji, including Kadavu, Lau, Rotuma, and Lomaiviti. Minister Gavoka explained that many of these routes face challenges related to low passenger numbers and high operational costs.

The government’s support through subsidies emphasizes a commitment to ensuring that all Fijians have access to necessary services such as healthcare and education, thus promoting geographic equity. Gavoka stated, “By subsidizing these services, the Government is ensuring residents of these islands retain vital air links for accessing healthcare, education, government services, and economic opportunities.”

In addition to this subsidy, the government plans to bolster regulatory measures within the aviation sector with a proposed allocation of $6.8 million to the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF). This funding is expected to enhance safety compliance and regulatory oversight, ensuring Fiji’s skies remain among the safest in the region. Gavoka highlighted prior achievements, including advancements in air traffic management and attainment of global safety certifications, thanking efforts that contribute to the positioning of Fiji as a reliable aviation hub.

These developments are part of broader government initiatives to modernize and improve Fiji’s aviation infrastructure. Previously announced projects, such as the proposed new airport in the Yasawas and the comprehensive review of the Civil Aviation Act, reflect a strategic commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering inclusive growth across all provinces. Such measures not only aim to improve air travel access but also stimulate economic activity and tourism, which is vital for recovery in the post-pandemic landscape.

Through these efforts, Fiji is positioning itself for a brighter future, enhancing its appeal as a travel destination while ensuring that no community is left behind in the pursuit of national development.
