The Vodafone Fijiana XV rugby team kicked off the 2025 Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship with an outstanding performance, defeating Tonga 59-5 in their opening match at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, despite challenging weather conditions. The match, marked by heavy rain, drew a modest crowd primarily composed of local school students who cheered passionately for the teams.
Fiji’s forward pack made a strong start, with Mereoni Nakesa being the first to find the try line just two minutes into the game. Litiana Vueti, making her international debut as a full-back, showcased her skill by scoring another try and performed well despite some minor difficulties in clearance and territorial kicking. The Fijiana dominated the first half, scoring six tries, including two from standout player Josifini Neihamu, who displayed excellent form throughout the match. However, none of the tries in the first half were converted, leaving Fiji leading 30-0 at halftime.
The rain continued into the second half, affecting the performance of both teams. Fiji capitalized on their momentum, adding another five tries, with Neihamu securing her third try of the match. Completing the scoring were debutants like flanker Manuqalo Naome Komaitai and prop Salanieta Nabuli, who each crossed for a try to bring the final score to 59-5. Vueti successfully converted two tries, highlighting her contributions to the team.
Tonga struggled throughout the match and managed a consolation try, when Prop Viviena Hingano powered through for their sole points. Fijiana captain Alfreda Fisher expressed gratitude towards the Tongan team and praised her players for executing the game plan effectively, despite the adverse conditions.
The victory has set a positive tone for Fijiana as they prepare for their next challenge against Samoa on June 14. This match not only emphasizes Fiji’s growing strength in women’s rugby but also serves to inspire future generations of players. With a mix of talented debutants and established athletes, the Fijiana’s journey in the championship is filled with hope and ambition to foster women’s rugby further in the region.
