Fiji Women Unite: A March for Safety and Equality

Women from various backgrounds took to the streets of Suva in a powerful march to celebrate International Women’s Day, reclaiming their right to safety and equality. The event was marked by spirited chants as participants called for safer schools, churches, and public spaces while advocating for women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Shamima Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC), addressed the need for rigorous progress in closing the persistent gaps in women’s rights and safety. She encouraged women to be vocal and active, emphasizing the strength that comes from unity in the face of adversity. “Do not suffer in silence; call out violence, utilize the toll-free helpline, and stand in solidarity with each other,” Ali urged, highlighting the importance of collective action against threats to women’s rights.

The lifestyle in Fiji has witnessed a gradual transformation since the inception of events like the “Reclaim The Night” march, which began in 1987 with just 30 participants and has expanded significantly over the years. This year, local authorities allowed the march to proceed with a limit of 800 participants, restricting political expressions, yet still underscoring the necessity of safe environments for women and children.

Previously, activists have expressed concern over governmental restrictions that impact the freedom of assembly and speech, which can hinder the fight for women’s rights. Marches such as this serve not only to advocate for immediate needs but also to foster a broader discussion on human rights issues and systemic change within Fijian society.

As members of the community come together to stand in solidarity, there remains a hopeful and determined spirit amongst the participants, showcasing a commitment to fostering change.
