Strengthening relations between Fiji and the United States was the primary agenda during a bilateral meeting held in Suva today. The discussions aimed to enhance economic cooperation, promote regional stability, and reinforce shared values between the two nations.

Christopher Landau, the US Deputy Secretary of State, conveyed greetings from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a traditional Fijian welcome ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality extended to him.

After the ceremonial welcome, Landau engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and high-ranking government officials. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Fiji, emphasizing that “Fiji holds a special place in the Pacific,” and recognizing the island nation’s significant contributions to regional security and its influential role in the international arena.

Landau highlighted shared values between the two nations, such as a belief in God, democratic governance, and the commitment to improving community well-being. He stated, “We are proud to be your partner,” underscoring the importance of collaboration.

Prime Minister Rabuka acknowledged Landau’s contributions to developing a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with Fiji, which aims to deliver tangible benefits to both countries. The MCC engagement marks a significant advancement in Fiji-US relations, offering promising solutions for pressing challenges and development goals.

Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s dedication to enhancing bilateral relations and noted efforts to bolster trade, economic cooperation, and initiatives focused on improving the lives of citizens in both nations. He reiterated Fiji’s commitment to working alongside the United States and other like-minded partners to promote regional stability and sustainable development, endorsing a vision of the Pacific as an “Ocean of Peace.”

Both leaders recognized that the current strength of their partnership is rooted in a long history of shared values and collaboration. Key areas of this cooperation include private-sector-led economic development, maritime security, public health, and joint efforts to combat transnational crime, including narcotics trafficking and illegal fishing practices.

This meeting reflects a forward-looking approach in enhancing bilateral ties, emphasizing a commitment to building a stable and prosperous future for both Fiji and the United States.
