The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, reflecting on six decades of significant contributions to the growth of Fiji’s tourism sector. During the commemoration event held last Friday, CEO Fantasha Lockington highlighted the association’s transformation from a small group of dedicated hoteliers in 1965 to a respected national entity recognized for its advocacy and leadership in tourism.

Lockington emphasized the importance of strong leadership, continual advocacy, and a commitment to sustainable practices as vital components of the industry’s impressive growth trajectory, which has consistently surpassed expectations. “This anniversary is not merely a celebration of our past but a moment to realign our focus on the future,” she noted, encouraging attendees to honor the ancestors of the industry who laid the groundwork for its development.

The event brought together various stakeholders and members to reflect on their collective achievements and rebuild momentum towards sustainable tourism. Narend Kumar, Area General Manager of the Tanoa Hotel Group, echoed this sentiment, stating that the industry, though young, has emerged stronger and more interconnected in the face of numerous challenges.

In a progressive move, the FHTA’s annual general meeting also introduced five newly-elected board members, including representatives from major hotel groups. This infusion of new leadership reinforces the association’s commitment to advocating for inclusivity, especially for smaller operators in the tourism sector.

Lockington’s insights parallel ongoing discussions within the industry, particularly concerning alignment with governmental initiatives to create a framework where tourism can thrive sustainably. With a collaborative approach, the FHTA aims to inspire innovation and resilience in Fiji’s tourism landscape, ultimately benefiting both the local community and visitors alike.

Recognizing the importance of this milestone, the FHTA highlights an optimistic outlook, with efforts to ensure Fiji’s tourism sector embraces growth and sustainability in the years to come.

Overall, the event symbolizes a hopeful direction for the future of Fiji’s tourism industry, reflecting a robust commitment to continuous improvement and shared success within the sector.
