The Fiji Taekwondo Association is eager to welcome Denzil Ray, the chairman of Oceania Taekwondo Union Kyorugi and development referee, to their educational program aimed at students and coaches in Fiji. Ray’s arrival from Australia marks a significant opportunity for local athletes to gain insights and skills from his extensive experience in the sport.

This initiative, which has been in the planning stages for two years, aims to equip participants with essential rules and techniques that will further their development in Taekwondo. Ray’s principal focus is on training new coaches and referees, with the hopes that some will gain the knowledge necessary to contribute to competitions like the upcoming Pacific Games in Tahiti and beyond.

He expresses a vision for the future, stating, “I would love to see the athletes and officials benefit from the support of the Olympic community and Para association, paving their way to the next Olympics up to 2032.” This emphasis on investing in both athletes and referees highlights the crucial role they play in nurturing future Taekwondo talent and knowledge within the community.

The program’s highlight will be the Fiji Taekwondo Presidents Cup competition, taking place at Khatri Hall in Suva. It promises to showcase the skills of 80 competing athletes and serve as a platform for their growth and competitive spirit. Ray is committed to ensuring that the event is well-organized and beneficial for all involved, aiming to provide a solid foundation for enthusiastic youths passionate about Taekwondo.

Additionally, previous efforts to enhance officiating standards in Taekwondo—such as a referees training course announced recently—complement Ray’s initiatives by providing a continued commitment to developing officiating quality in Fiji. This ongoing engagement reflects a strong community spirit dedicated to fostering well-rounded athletes and officials, further expected to positively impact the sport in the future.

This collaboration between experienced leaders and local athletes not only enriches Taekwondo in Fiji but also inspires hope for the emergence of future champions on both the national and international stages.
