As labor shortages continue to pose significant challenges for investors in Fiji, the private sector is proactively stepping up by investing in workforce training and skills development. Kamal Chetty, the Chief Executive of Investment Fiji, highlights that a lack of skilled labor and productivity issues are currently among the most pressing constraints for both domestic and foreign investors.

With rising demand across various sectors, including tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, businesses are taking the initiative by establishing their own training systems. Chetty notes that several major companies are setting up in-house academies and training programs aimed at cultivating local talent, rather than solely depending on the existing labor market.

These businesses are collaborating with universities and training institutions to pinpoint the skills that are vital for their operations and to ensure that graduates are equipped for the workforce. In some instances, companies are launching their own academies tailored to meet specific industry needs.

Chetty sees this proactive approach as a long-term solution to mitigate ongoing skills gaps, particularly as new investment opportunities arise in fields like renewable energy, technology, outsourcing, and value-added agriculture. Investment Fiji emphasizes that overcoming labor shortages requires a synergistic effort among the private sector, government, and educational institutions.

While investors are currently navigating immediate challenges, the development of longer-term strategies is underway to fortify the pipeline of skilled workers. Ensuring that training programs are aligned with investor needs is vital for sustaining economic growth and maintaining Fiji’s appeal to investors in an increasingly competitive global landscape. This collaborative effort not only aims to address current labor issues but also sets the stage for a more skilled and prepared workforce in the future.
