The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations has confirmed that 34 workers from Yaqara Pastoral Company PTE Ltd in Tavua, affiliated with the National Union of Workers (NUW), initiated a strike yesterday. This industrial action is primarily driven by serious concerns regarding unpaid employment benefits, workplace safety violations, and breaches of agreed employment conditions.

The strong support for the strike was reflected in the NUW’s successful secret ballot on February 9, 2026, where an impressive 81 percent of union members voted in favor of the strike action.

In response to the situation, officials from the Ministry have engaged in discussions separately with both the union and the employer. Both parties have shown a willingness to enter into negotiations, with plans already underway to establish a date for further discussions aimed at reaching an amicable resolution.

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh emphasized that the Ministry will closely monitor the developments and has urged all parties involved to participate in constructive dialogue, highlighting the importance of maintaining industrial harmony.

This strike not only addresses immediate worker concerns but also underscores the critical need for compliance with workplace regulations and the protection of workers’ rights in Fiji’s labor landscape. As discussions move forward, there is hope for a resolution that could restore normalcy and strengthen labor relations at Yaqara Pastoral.
