The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has confirmed that their booking for Albert Park in Suva on February 4 was made well in advance, countering claims of a last-minute reservation. This clarification comes amid a dispute with the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) regarding venue allocations, particularly concerning training for the upcoming OFC Women’s Nations Cup and a rugby test match against Scotland.

The Fiji FA has alleged that they were informed by the Suva City Council (SCC) that no sporting federation had booked the venue during the tournament window and were surprised to learn that priority was given to the FRU for training activities. FRU’s operations manager, Sale Sorovaki, stated that evidence exists confirming the booking was made five months ago and that they had requested the use of grounds two and three due to the temporary closure of ground one.

Discussions between the two federations have highlighted differences in the types of footwear used by players, which led to the SCC prioritizing the rugby union’s use of the grounds, despite the Fiji FA’s intention to prepare their players with mold-stud traction appropriate for the pitch. The SCC cited sustainability concerns over the park’s surface as a reason for favoring the FRU.

Following these developments, the FRU has also secured additional venues, having booked Fiji Sports Council’s Bidesi and Buckhurst Park to ensure training needs are met.

This venue dispute underscores ongoing challenges in Fiji’s sporting landscape where coordination and communication between different sports organizations are critical. Both the FRU and Fiji FA are currently navigating the complexities of their respective events, with aspirations for improved collaboration moving forward. This spirit of cooperation could pave the way for a more harmonious coexistence of football and rugby, benefitting athletes, fans, and the overall sporting culture in Fiji.

Ultimately, as these federations work through their disagreements, there is hope for a resolution that supports the growth of both sports, allowing them to shine on the international stage.
