The Fijian Ministry of Justice has launched an important initiative aimed at integrating public feedback into the review of the nation’s electoral laws. This move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that the perspectives of all Fijians are integral to the democratic process.

Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga affirmed the government’s focus on inclusivity, outlining plans for extensive public consultations regarding key legislative frameworks, including the Electoral Act 2014, the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012, and the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act 2013. Over the next two to three weeks, dedicated teams will visit various communities throughout the nation to gather insights on the current electoral system.

This ambitious review aims to align Fiji’s electoral procedures with global best practices while being mindful of the country’s distinctive cultural and social landscape. The synthesized reports and proposed draft regulations from these citizen consultations will be submitted for review to the Attorney General and other relevant authorities.

The reform initiative also answers previous criticisms of the electoral framework by particularly aiming to improve representation and participation, notably for women in politics. It represents a constructive step towards building a more inclusive democracy and ensuring every citizen’s voice plays a role in shaping Fiji’s political landscape.

This commitment to reform not only enhances prospects for building trust in the electoral process but also empowers the public. By fostering a collaborative approach, Fiji is set to embark on significant advancements in its democratic journey, boosting confidence in governance and promoting civic participation across all demographics. This initiative serves as a hopeful testament to Fiji’s dedication to strengthening its democratic ideals.
