Fiji Secures Major Funding for Climate-Resilient Infrastructure

The Fijian government has obtained $134.5 million (about $307.7 million Fijian) from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Critical Bridges Resilience Project, which aims to replace four significant bridges on the island of Viti Levu. This financial package comprises $120 million in concessional loans and $14.5 million in grants, aimed at bolstering infrastructure resilience in the face of climate change.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating that the funding will address critical infrastructure needs and ensure that essential transport links can withstand extreme weather conditions. He pointed out that upgrading these bridges is vital for enhancing connectivity and supporting sustainable long-term growth in Fiji.

The specific bridges targeted for replacement include the Lami, Medraukutu, Sabeto, and Viseisei bridges, which play an important role in connecting communities, facilitating trade, and supporting the country’s tourism industry. This initiative aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan that prioritizes the development of climate-resilient infrastructure and improved connectivity across the nation.

The terms of the loan are advantageous, featuring a 40-year repayment period and a 10-year grace period, allowing the government the necessary flexibility to implement the project without imposing heavy financial burdens.

This agreement not only aids Fiji in enhancing its infrastructure but also fosters an enduring partnership with the ADB, demonstrating a collaborative approach to overcoming the challenges posed by climate change.

Overall, this project stands as a hopeful step forward for Fiji, highlighting the government’s commitment to building a resilient and sustainable future for its people.
