The Fiji Rugby Union is considering significant changes to its promotion and relegation system for the 2025 Skipper Cup and Vanua Championship. This topic was a key discussion point during the union’s recent annual general meeting, held last Saturday. Ba Rugby presented a motion to eliminate the promotion and relegation playoffs, advocating for a system where the champion of the Vanua Championship automatically qualifies for the Skipper Cup.
Ba Rugby vice-president Noa Kautoga pointed out that the financial implications of preparing for a single promotion/relegation playoff game can be exceedingly burdensome for the teams involved, costing upwards of two to three thousand dollars. Kautoga emphasized that it would be more efficient to grant direct qualification to the top team in the Vanua Championship based on their performance throughout the season.
In response, Fiji Rugby Union Board chairman John Sanday confirmed that the board is moving toward implementing this proposal, which will allow the top team from Vanua to ascend directly to the Skipper Cup, recognizing their status as champions without the need for a playoff.
These discussions come on the heels of recent changes in Fiji’s domestic rugby landscape, including the integration of traditional challenges into the regular season, as well as adjustments to tournament formats aimed at mitigating financial stress on teams. The 2025 Skipper Cup is set to begin on Saturday, with the Vanua Championship kicking off on September 5.
This proposed shift could enhance competitive integrity while alleviating financial strains on clubs, reflecting a positive direction for the future of rugby in Fiji. As these developments unfold, there is hope that they will create more sustainable pathways for clubs and players, ultimately leading to a stronger rugby community in the nation.
