Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has announced that new allegations concerning police officers are now under investigation by an independent cold case team comprised of retired senior investigators. This step has been taken to enhance transparency and restore public trust, particularly in light of recent claims suggesting that current Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel may have been compromised.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized that all fresh allegations against police officers, including those reported from overseas, will now be directed to this independent team. He stated, “Our detectives are doing the investigation on the viral message. However, we have made a decision that all new allegations, especially those that came from other sources, are now routed towards this independent group of former CID personnel.”
The Commissioner pointed out that officers are placed on leave or interdicted only when investigators confirm a direct connection between the officer and the alleged misconduct. “We are sending officers on leave on interdiction every week because the link is directly tied to the alleged conduct. I want to ascertain that link first,” Tudravu remarked.
The Police Commissioner reiterated the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to thoroughly investigate all allegations and to take appropriate measures when evidence is substantiated. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to address public concerns and reinforce accountability within the force. The move is also a crucial step in ensuring that the integrity of the police is upheld, which is essential in fostering community trust.
