The Fiji Police Force recently wrapped up an important Senior Officers Seminar at the Novotel Hotel in Lami, centering on the progress of the FPF Uplift Program, which is endorsed by the Australian Federal Police. The event set the framework for the Fiji Police’s proposed Strategic Plan for 2025 to 2029.
The seminar commenced with an address from the Minister for Policing, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, who highlighted the necessity for modern law enforcement to evolve in response to a fast-changing security landscape. He expressed growing concerns over various emerging threats, including cybercrime, artificial intelligence, transnational organized crime, and security challenges triggered by climate change.
“We live in a time of extraordinary change. Traditional policing methods are no longer adequate. The Fiji Police Force must lead the change, not follow it,” stated Minister Naivalurua, emphasizing the role of law enforcement as a “national pillar.” He urged senior officers to embrace innovation, enhance leadership, and strengthen public trust.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu praised his team’s commitment and reiterated the importance of unity in pursuing their goals. “Nobody can come from outside to take this organization forward. We are here as a team to do that, and the Uplift will assist us in taking this organization forward,” he affirmed.
The seminar also featured presentations from key police officials, including Permanent Secretary for Policing, Mr. Beranado Kolinio Daveta, and Mr. Biu Matavou, Principal Project Officer for the Police Act Review Team. They provided important updates concerning legislative and policy reforms aimed at modernizing policing practices.
The emphasis on adapting to contemporary challenges faced by law enforcement, particularly in light of rising crime rates and the need for community engagement, reflects a positive trajectory for the Fiji Police Force. As these reforms progress, there is hope for enhanced public safety and renewed confidence in the police among Fiji’s residents.
In conclusion, the proactive steps taken to modernize the Fiji Police Force are a testament to the commitment of law enforcement to evolve and confront today’s challenges. The collaboration between various stakeholders and international partners illustrates a collective effort towards ensuring a safer community for all.
