As concerns about crime escalated in Fiji, the police took proactive measures by enhancing their training programs. On May 5, 1999, it was reported that police officers from across the nation gathered for essential firearms training designed to prepare them for high-stress scenarios.

This significant live-fire exercise took place at the Rifle Range in Vatuwaqa, Suva, under the guidance of firearms and explosives expert Inspector Peter Blake. Conducted a day earlier, the event was a vital component of a comprehensive four-week training course hosted by the Fiji Police Academy in Nasova.

The primary aim of the training was to familiarize officers with the effective use of firearms, along with instilling a deeper understanding of their impact and enhancing overall weapon handling skills. A total of 124 participants, including both male and female police officers, engaged in the workshop, alongside representatives from the Transport Control Board and one member of the Republic of Fiji Military Force.

The larger training initiative encompassed a variety of subjects, including refresher courses for constables, traffic management strategies, drug-related training, senior command courses, fingerprint computer training, and specialized courses for station officers. This broad spectrum of training was facilitated by senior police officers, qualified instructors, and industry specialists.

Highlighting the significance of this training, Assistant Superintendent Shiu Kumar, the Deputy Commandant of the Police Academy, emphasized that investing in training is crucial for the police department. He remarked, “When these participants return to their respective stations, they will help in the operation and service to the community,” underscoring the essential role of proper training in combating the rising crime rates.

The course, which commenced on May 6 and concluded on June 14, 1999, culminated in a certificate ceremony recognizing the dedication and achievement of all participants. This ongoing commitment to police training signifies a positive step towards enhancing public safety and community trust in law enforcement.
