Fiji Police Academy Overhauls Community Policing Curriculum for a Safer Tomorrow

Work has commenced on the review of the Fiji Police Academy’s School of Community Policing Curriculum, marking a significant step in the transformative journey of the Fiji Police Force (FPF). This initiative aligns with the goals of the Fiji Police Force Training and Development Framework and is aimed at enhancing the quality, consistency, reliability, and reputation of police training.

A consultation forum launched this effort at Nakasi Police Station, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Administration (ACP/A) Meli Sateki. The forum included participation from senior and front-line community policing officers, retired officers, as well as Dr. Eci Nabalarua, the architect of the Duavata Community Policing model, alongside advisors from the New Zealand Police as part of the Fiji Police Partnership Programme (FPPP).

This curriculum review is crucial as it seeks to align training with the specific roles and responsibilities of community policing personnel such as Divisional Managers, Post officers, and Cluster Chiefs. ACP Sateki emphasized the importance of addressing challenges in policing, particularly related to training and succession planning. He highlighted a revolutionary shift in the training delivery method for community police officers to better prepare them for their roles, rather than simply reflecting their rank.

ACP Sateki encouraged candid discussions during the consultation, recognizing the diverse experiences and insights of participants. He expressed optimism about the outcomes of this review process, which he believes will empower police officers for both internal succession and external marketability, enabling them to serve Fiji effectively in various capacities.

The forum will conclude on Friday, paving the way for potential changes that could significantly enhance the effectiveness of community policing in Fiji.

This initiative is part of a broader context highlighted in a related ‘Police Reset’ document, emphasizing modernizing the Fiji Police Force’s structure for better operational efficiency, accountability, and community trust. The ongoing focus on structured leadership development and community engagement presents a hopeful vision for the future of policing in Fiji, aiming for greater safety and increased public confidence in law enforcement.
