Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken decisive action by dismissing Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru and directing the suspension of Fiji Sports Council Chief Executive Officer Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure as investigations commence into serious allegations of misuse of office and funds.
In a public statement issued yesterday, Mr. Rabuka cited the need for an independent investigation as the primary reason for his actions. “Given the gravity of the allegations raised, and to ensure due process is honored, I have immediately relieved Minister Saukuru of his duties,” he stated. This decision is intended to facilitate a thorough investigation by the Fiji Police Force regarding the alleged abuses connected to the Fiji Sports Council.
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s seriousness in addressing allegations of public office misuse, declaring, “The integrity of public office and the proper management of public resources are fundamental principles that this Government insists all public officials adhere to consistently.”
Furthermore, Mr. Rabuka has appointed himself as the interim head of the Youth and Sports ministry to ensure seamless operations during this tumultuous period. His actions reflect a commitment to transparency and accountability in government, vital for restoring public trust.
The thorough investigation promises not only to uphold the integrity of public office but to reinforce the values on which the Fiji government stands. This proactive approach highlights a dedication to maintaining high ethical standards among all public officials.
