Leaders from 15 netball associations across Fiji have come together to call for a Special General Meeting (SGM) for Netball Fiji (NF), which is scheduled for March 29. The assembly expresses considerable dissatisfaction with the current executive committee’s performance and has initiated a motion of no confidence against NF president RubyAnn Sorovaki and her team.
In a letter detailing their concerns, the associations have outlined several governance failures as justification for their actions. The motion cites 12 significant reasons, including inadequate governance, unprofessional conduct among NF officials, lack of financial transparency, and mismanagement of the Fiji Pearls, the national netball team.
The Fiji Pearls have faced considerable setbacks, currently holding a rank of 16th in the world according to World Netball. Their drop in ranking reflects a broader issue, as the team failed to qualify for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Stakeholders attribute this failure to insufficient strategic planning and high-performance initiatives, resulting in growing dissatisfaction among supporters and a clear need for new direction.
The associations also highlight a noticeable decline in sponsorship opportunities, which have been linked to the team’s poor performances and are having a detrimental effect on grassroots development. The absence of structured programs for young players and insufficient training opportunities for local coaches and umpires exacerbate the challenges facing netball in Fiji, underlining a pressing need for reform.
Netball Fiji has acknowledged the motion and expressed commitment to transparency and good governance. They have pledged to address the issues raised and aim to unite the netball community to enhance the overall sport in the nation.
Key stakeholders view the upcoming SGM as a crucial opportunity for rejuvenation within Fijian netball. By focusing on collaboration and constructive dialogue, there is hope for the establishment of a stronger governance structure that could revitalize both leadership and grassroots initiatives.
In a positive light, the future of netball in Fiji seems filled with potential, as associations unite in their quest for change and accountability, hoping to foster a renewed spirit of success on the international stage.
