Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro has announced that he has acted on the directives of the Prime Minister to inform the Fiji National University (FNU) Council about changes in oversight. This decision stems from a strategic vision aimed at better aligning the university’s operations with national planning priorities.
In his statement, Radrodro emphasized his commitment to support the government leader, the Prime Minister, and the Chair of Cabinet by executing the reassignment as directed. The Prime Minister’s initiative is seen as a means to integrate FNU into a whole-of-government approach to development.
Radrodro highlighted FNU’s vital role as a dual-sector institution that offers both higher education and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Given this unique position, he acknowledged that the government is poised to align FNU more closely with its broader strategic planning framework.
The Minister reinforced SODELPA’s dedication to the coalition government and expressed a commitment to collective responsibility and serving the community, all while focusing on the enhancement of FNU. He emphasized the historical oversight role of the Ministry of Education in the university but clarified that the primary concern remains to strengthen the institution. This focus aims to ensure FNU can effectively contribute to workforce development, bolster economic resilience, and support the nation’s long-term aspirations.
Radrodro assured students, staff, and stakeholders that government backing for education would remain steadfast throughout this transition and called upon the FNU community to collaborate effectively during this period of change. This strategic reorientation is viewed positively as a necessary step towards enhancing the university’s impact on national development goals.
