The Fiji National University (FNU) Council has voiced its concerns regarding governance and proper procedures following the government’s recent decision to transfer ministerial responsibility for the university. The Council asserts that it was not consulted prior to this action, which it believes has led to disruptions and uncertainty within the institution.

In a statement released after a Council meeting, FNU Chancellor and Council Chair Semesa Karavaki acknowledged the government’s authority but expressed that the decision’s suddenness has compromised essential governance procedures. “We have noted the reasons provided and are prepared to engage constructively with the Office of the Prime Minister to support national development objectives,” he stated.

However, he indicated that the Council was “profoundly concerned” about being informed post-facto of the reassignment. According to Karavaki, as FNU’s governing body established by the FNU Act, the Council should have been consulted beforehand. He emphasized that the lack of consultation has fostered unnecessary uncertainty and has negatively affected key initiatives already in progress.

The Council’s work has been further complicated, with ongoing efforts to address governance issues within the university that predate the ministerial reassignment. Earlier this month, the Council decided to investigate formal complaints against the Vice-Chancellor, placing them on leave while the matter is reviewed.

Karavaki raised concerns that a submission to the government, which prompted the decision to reassign responsibilities, was made without the Council’s knowledge or approval, violating principles of good governance and accountability that the Council is bound to uphold.

The Council has formally requested an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister to clarify the strategic vision for FNU. “Our position is clear. We welcome dialogue, we uphold the rule of law, and we insist on due process,” Karavaki affirmed, reiterating the importance of the Council’s role as the legally recognized authority governing the university.

He highlighted the need for stability and the safeguarding of FNU’s academic mission, urging all stakeholders to approach the situation with maturity and respect. Karavaki emphasized that the collective focus must remain on the welfare of students and the integrity of Fiji’s premier national university, while also expressing readiness to collaborate with the government toward strengthening future governance structures at FNU.
