A man has been sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison following his conviction for the manslaughter of his wife in a domestic violence incident. The Labasa High Court sentenced 48-year-old Sairusi Maqosa to 11 years and 11 months, having been found guilty of the crime that occurred in April 2023 at their home in Malau.

Court proceedings revealed that Maqosa inflicted severe harm on his wife, repeatedly kicking her in the head, which resulted in a grave brain injury. Tragically, she remained in a vegetative state and passed away nearly a month later while receiving medical care.

During the sentencing phase, the presiding judge characterized the attack as serious, emphasizing that it involved a substantial breach of trust and took place within the intimate setting of the home, factors that contributed to the severity of the offense. Maqosa is slated to be eligible for parole after serving seven years and 11 months of his sentence.

This case underscores the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and the impact it has on families and communities. It serves as a grim reminder of the need for continued awareness and prevention efforts to combat such violence and protect vulnerable individuals.
