The Fiji Law Society has called on Janet Mason, who is assisting the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into Barbara Malimali’s appointment as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), to step aside from her current role. This request arises from concerns that her continued involvement could undermine public trust in the inquiry’s integrity. The Law Society clarified that their recommendation does not equate to an outright removal but is a prudent measure until the unresolved issues regarding her professional conduct are addressed.

Janet Mason faces a finding of misconduct from the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal, a decision she is appealing. Furthermore, there are serious allegations regarding her application for a practicing certificate in Fiji, which have prompted scrutiny concerning the handling of her case by the Legal Practitioners Unit.

The Fiji Law Society emphasized the necessity of maintaining high standards of integrity and professionalism among all participants in the inquiry. Given that the COI is reviewing the legality and appropriateness of Malimali’s appointment, both Mason and the Commissioner must demonstrate integrity beyond reproach to uphold the credibility of the COI’s processes.

In response to the Law Society’s call, Mason has expressed her grievances, asserting that their actions aim to undermine her position. She has filed a police report concerning allegations of document tampering related to her application, defending her qualifications and integrity as a legal practitioner.

As the inquiry unfolds, there is a sense of hope that it may catalyze essential reforms within Fiji’s governance framework, ensuring enhanced accountability and transparency in the political and legal systems. This situation not only addresses specific allegations but also represents a pivotal moment to promote a culture of ethical governance and restore public trust in governmental operations.

In summary, while challenges surrounding Mason’s role in the COI persist, this inquiry holds the potential for significant positive changes in governance practices in Fiji. Stakeholders are optimistic that the findings will reinforce commitment to integrity and foster a more transparent political environment.
