The Ministry of Employment in Fiji has initiated a national consultation regarding its Inclusive Employment Guidebook, which aims to enhance disability inclusion across workplaces in the country. This initiative was announced by Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh, who emphasized that the consultation goes beyond mere document review; it represents a reaffirmed national commitment to ensure that all Fijians, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, have equitable opportunities to contribute to the economy.

Minister Singh pointed out that this effort is in alignment with Section 6 of the Employment Relations Act 2007, which explicitly prohibits employment discrimination. He stressed the importance of equal opportunities and remuneration for all employees, affirming that workplace discrimination based on health or disability is unlawful. Furthermore, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2018 guarantees individuals with disabilities the right to work on equal footing with others, promoting access to safe and inclusive workplaces supported by necessary accommodations.

While Fiji’s legal framework and international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are firmly established, Singh noted that tangible changes depend largely on dedication and actionable strategies. The guidebook is designed to translate these legal rights into pragmatic steps for employers, including accessible recruitment processes, workplace modifications, and the cultivation of inclusive organizational cultures that ensure safe working environments.

Acknowledging the persistent barriers that many individuals with disabilities encounter in securing employment, which limit both personal potential and national productivity, Singh asserted that inclusive employment transcends issues of fairness; it is a matter of sound policy and advantageous business practice. The consultation will involve gathering insights from various stakeholders to ensure that the guidebook establishes a clear and effective framework for fostering inclusive workplaces throughout Fiji. This collaborative approach aims to create environments where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive and contribute positively to the economy.
