The Coalition Government of Fiji has confirmed its dedication to maintaining financial stability and fostering economic growth and sustainable development as it prepares for the national budget for 2024-2025. This commitment was emphasized during a Donor Round-table Meeting held at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami Bay, which gathered key development partners to discuss Fiji’s strategic priorities.
Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Biman Prasad, highlighted the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to achieve national development goals. He outlined the need for strategic investments in vital areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.
Prasad stated, “Our government is committed to standing strong and resilient, ensuring that no Fijian is left behind.” He also pointed out the positive trajectory of Fiji’s economy as it recovers from the pandemic, with anticipated GDP growth of 3.8% in 2024, projected to exceed pre-pandemic levels by year-end.
Key priorities outlined by the Coalition Government include restoring financial discipline, rebuilding fiscal reserves, managing public debt, and shifting economic policies towards sustainable growth. Prasad mentioned that the forthcoming budget aims to strike a balance between prudent fiscal management and investments that enhance the well-being of all Fijians.
In previous related discussions, Prasad noted that the government has been proactive in listening to the community’s needs. Initiatives such as tax reforms and the reduction of the debt-to-GDP ratio have been significant steps toward fiscal responsibility and economic resilience. The tourism sector, which contributes significantly to Fiji’s GDP, along with strategic projects, continues to underpin this hopeful recovery.
Overall, the government’s reaffirmation of its commitment signals a collaborative path forward for Fiji, promising a stable and prosperous future for its citizens amidst ongoing global economic challenges.
