The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain warning for the Fiji group, alerting residents to expect significant rainfall in the coming days. A flash flood warning is also in effect for the entire Viti Levu, while a flash flood alert remains in force for all of Vanua Levu.
Currently, Tropical Cyclone Urmil, classified as a Category 2 system, is situated west-southwest of Kadavu and is moving southeastward. This system is resulting in strong northwesterly winds along with active rainbands affecting the islands.
Fijians can anticipate varying periods of rain, which may be heavy at times and accompanied by isolated thunderstorms. The potential for localized heavy falls raises concerns for flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The forecast indicates a moderate to high confidence in these developments.
Recent significant rainfall data indicates that some areas have experienced substantial downpours, including Nadarivatu with 132 mm, Waikubukubu at 92 mm, Tavua with 88.5 mm, and Lautoka at 59 mm. Other noteworthy rainfall includes Monasavu (60.5 mm), Doboilevu (62.5 mm), Penang (52 mm), Navua (59.5 mm), RKS Lodoni (51.5 mm), and Rarawai (58 mm).
The Nadi Weather Office also warns of the heightened risk of flash flooding, particularly in informal settlements, poorly drained streets, and Irish crossings, which may disrupt traffic. With wet roads and reduced visibility during intense downpours, the risk of accidents increases, prompting residents to exercise caution.
In light of these warnings, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. With timely alertness and proactive measures, the community can effectively navigate the challenges posed by the current weather conditions.
