The Government of Fiji is intensifying its efforts to provide essential services to remote communities, exemplified by a recent outreach initiative in Matacawalevu, Nacula, located in the Yasawa Islands. This program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, brought together officials from multiple agencies, including the Ministry of Employment Productivity and Workplace Relations, the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development, the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, and the Fiji Police Force.

During the event, residents of Matacawalevu had direct access to a range of important services, such as youth group registrations, the issuance of new Joint ID Cards, cooperative business registrations, enrollments in the National Employment Centre, and HIV testing and counseling.

Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, emphasized the significance of these outreach programs in ensuring that maritime communities do not face obstacles due to their geographical locations. He highlighted that access to government support should be equitable for all citizens, irrespective of where they live.

Furthermore, Saukuru expressed his concern regarding the rising number of HIV cases among the youth and the increasing impact of drug use within villages. He called for heightened awareness and collaborative action to safeguard the health and future of young people in these communities.

This initiative demonstrates a commitment to bridging the gap between urban and rural services in Fiji, aiming to empower communities and provide them with crucial support needed for development. By addressing health concerns and promoting access to resources, the government is taking tangible steps toward fostering a healthier and more equitable society.
