Fiji is making significant strides in expanding its agricultural export markets, particularly with the introduction of locally grown produce to overseas destinations. Among the notable developments, guava is now being shipped to Japan, while Fiji’s pineapples have begun to penetrate the Middle Eastern market.

Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna emphasized that this expansion is crucial for fostering export growth and enhancing income opportunities for local farmers. He highlighted the potential for establishing large-scale pineapple farms, which would allow for consistent supply during peak season, while also providing solutions for products that do not meet export qualifications through processing.

Tunabuna noted that Japan is viewed as a vital market for further expansion and confirmed that the initiative to export pineapples to the Middle East commenced late last year, currently operating in a trial phase. The early feedback from consumers has been encouraging, reinforcing the potential of this venture.

The minister also underscored the importance of adhering to strict quality standards as Fiji prepares to explore entry into the New Zealand market. With the right strategies in place, there is a promising outlook for the country’s agricultural sector, paving the way for increased exports and improved livelihoods for farmers.
