The Fiji Bulikula Residents team began training on October 9 in preparation for their upcoming match against the Canada Ravens scheduled for July 28. Leading the team is head coach Viliame Domo, who is determined to prepare the players well, despite facing challenges with securing funding and sponsorship.

Domo openly addressed the significance of financial support in training, stating, “When you talk about preparation, you need money. You need sponsors. You need the budget, which we currently don’t have at the moment. So hopefully a good Samaritan will come along the way.” Drawing from his experiences, he reminisced about making sacrifices during his time playing for Fiji at the World Cup qualifiers in 2006, highlighting the spirit of dedication and commitment to representing Fiji, irrespective of sponsorship issues.

The coach emphasized the importance of mental resilience, saying, “It’s mind over matter. It’s about whatever you think you transfer that into your heart, and that’s what your heart believes.” Domo has encouraged the players to remain strong during their rigorous training sessions, preparing for tough challenges ahead, including thoughts of intensive sand dune training before the game week.

Domo expressed his pride in the players ready to represent their country, calling them champions. The roster includes a mix of forwards and backs, with players from various teams across Fiji. This dedication from the players comes at a time when many are stepping up despite the absence of financial backing.

This year’s preparations echo sentiments from past articles concerning Fiji’s national rugby teams, which have faced similar challenges in securing funds. For instance, the Fiji Bati, under head coach Waisake Kativerata, has also highlighted the need for proper training conditions and funds, as the team approaches its upcoming matches in the Pacific Bowl Championship. Both teams exemplify the spirit of determination within Fiji’s rugby scenes amid tough circumstances, inspiring fans and supporters alike.

The Fiji Bulikula’s resolve to overcome obstacles and hold firm to their commitment signifies hope as they gear up for their significant match against the Canada Ravens. The community’s support is essential, as it uplifts spirits and fortifies the ambitions of these athletes, who continue to symbolize resilience in the face of adversity.
