A heavy rain warning has been issued for Fiji as a slow-moving trough of low pressure lingers over the country, according to the Fiji Meteorological Service. Concurrently, Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Urmil, currently situated over Vanuatu, is expected to shift southeast and pass southwest of Fiji later tonight.

The forecast suggests that this system will generate strong north-westerly winds, leading to active rain bands across much of Fiji. Residents can expect intermittent to periods of rain, particularly heavy at times, along with possible thunderstorms. Meteorologists caution that localized heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone regions.

Potential impacts include flash floods affecting informal settlements and communities vulnerable to flooding. There are also concerns about disruptions to businesses and flooding at irregular crossings that may cause traffic delays. Urban areas with inadequate drainage systems could experience surface flooding, while wet road conditions and diminished visibility during heavy showers pose increased risks for road accidents.

Citizens are advised to stay vigilant, take necessary precautions, and keep track of official weather updates as the situation develops. This alert serves as a reminder for all to prepare and stay safe during adverse weather conditions.
