A flash flood alert has been issued for the Western Division of Fiji, impacting regions from Sigatoka to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, as heavy rainfall persists across the country. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that a trough of low pressure, bringing cloudy conditions and showers, is slowly moving over the nation.

Compounding the situation, Tropical Cyclone Urmil, currently classified as a Category 2 cyclone, is located over Vanuatu and is projected to move southeast, passing southwest of Fiji. This system is expected to bring a strong and moist north-westerly wind flow over Fiji, enhancing the likelihood of heavy rain bands beginning later today.

The heightened rainfall poses a significant risk of flash flooding and riverine flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Tide levels are being closely monitored, with Lautoka experiencing a high tide at 3:41 PM of 1.79 meters and a low tide expected at 10:16 PM at 0.59 meters. Similarly, in Suva, a high tide of 1.65 meters is anticipated at 4:02 PM, with a low tide at 10:36 PM at 0.18 meters.

Authorities caution that the combination of heavy rainfall and high tides could exacerbate flooding, especially near river mouths and coastal communities. Residents are urged to stay vigilant, avoid flooded roads and waterways, and adhere to official weather advisories as these unsettled conditions continue.

As Fiji faces this serious weather event, the collective response and precautionary measures are key to ensuring safety for all residents.
