Fiji and Japan have solidified their partnership with a new agreement aimed at developing significant meteorological infrastructure to enhance regional disaster preparedness and response. The Fiji Meteorological Service has formalized this collaboration, establishing plans for a state-of-the-art facility designed not only to furnish improved meteorological services but also to bolster disaster risk reduction strategies in the Pacific region.
The agreement entails a $27 million investment from Japan, which will facilitate the construction of a new facility dedicated to regional meteorological operations. The project is being supported by a consortium of Japanese firms, including Nippon Koei Co. Ltd., Koei Research & Consulting Inc., and the Japan Weather Association, who will provide consulting services for the development.
This initiative continues Japan’s long-standing support for Fiji’s disaster management endeavors, building upon previous collaborations that date back to the 1990s, including the construction of existing meteorological centers in the region.
