The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has officially closed a complaint against former Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, concerning her alleged failure to disclose her spouse’s income. This closure took place prior to Barbara Malimali’s tenure as Commissioner, which started on September 5, 2024.
The FICAC emphasized that the investigation and subsequent decision to close the case were made under the direction of former Acting Deputy Commissioner, Francis Puleiwai, and that the complaint had originated from the Supervisor of Elections’ office on April 5, 2024. An investigation was launched shortly after, confirming that Tabuya’s marriage to Robert Semaan had ended legally in December 2016. As a result, a recommendation for case closure was made on August 5, 2024.
In response to Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu’s claims, FICAC firmly rejected any suggestions of political interference, pointing out that Ms. Malimali was not involved in the earlier proceedings of the case. The Commission called for caution among public figures to ensure that their comments regarding its operations are factual and responsible.
FICAC’s commitment to maintaining impartiality and adhering to evidence-based decision-making underscores the importance of integrity in political processes. The rejection of unfounded claims reinforces the accountability of institutions in upholding the rule of law.
This situation serves as a reminder of the value of transparency and diligence in governance, encouraging public confidence in legal institutions and democratic processes. It highlights the necessity for all individuals, especially those in positions of authority, to substantiate their claims with verified information.
