The Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF) has expressed significant concerns regarding the forthcoming public consultations for the Employment Relations Act 2007 and the Work Care Bill 2024, set to occur from January 8 to 17, 2025. The FCEF argues that the time allocated for submissions is too short and the unavailability of draft Bills undermines the effectiveness of the consultations.
FCEF’s CEO, Edward Bernard, has called on the Ministry of Employment to postpone these consultations until February 2025, emphasizing the need for businesses and workers to have sufficient time to prepare and engage meaningfully. He pointed out that providing only three hours in each city and town is inadequate for comprehensive representation and discussion.
Furthermore, Bernard raised alarms about the Work Care Bill 2024, which he noted has not yet been reviewed by the Employment Relations Advisory Board (ERAB). He has urged for this Bill to be withdrawn until there is an opportunity for further discussions with relevant stakeholders.
This situation highlights the critical importance of inclusive dialogue in shaping labor laws that affect many individuals and businesses. Postponing the consultations could allow for a more thorough and considerate approach to addressing the needs and concerns of all parties involved.
In the spirit of collaboration and progress, it would be beneficial for the Ministry of Employment to consider these requests earnestly, fostering a more conducive environment for stakeholder engagement.
