Epeli Balawa, a 50-year-old single father, was moved to tears when his daughter, Repeka Koroi, was honored as the Year Eight dux award winner at Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata. His tears were filled with joy as Repeka also received a sponsorship letter from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School, enabling her to continue her education and sports pursuits.
Repeka, proud of her achievements, excelled by winning gold in both the Under-14 girls 800 meters and 1500 meters finals at last month’s Fiji Primary Schools Tucker Ice Cream Games held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Balawa, who has been the primary caretaker of his four children since his wife left four years ago, reflected on the challenge of parenting solo but found joy in Repeka’s accomplishments. He himself had also been recognized as the Year Eight dux at Bulavou District School in 1989.
With a score of 425 out of 500 on her annual examination, Repeka expressed her ambition to become a primary school teacher. Living in the school’s hostel with her younger siblings ages six, ten, and 15, she shares a touching bond with her father, dedicating her success to him and praying for his long life, as he has been her only support during difficult times. Repeka recalled moments of concern for her father during her dinners at the hostel, wishing to ensure he was taking care of himself while they were away.
Every Friday, she returns home to spend time with her family, after which her father wakes up early on Mondays to prepare them for school. She is grateful to her teachers and coach, Iosefo Apisai, for their support and training that helped her achieve her recent victories.
