Fiji is actively promoting gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, as highlighted by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, during the recent International Women’s Day celebration held at the Reserve Bank of Fiji. Kiran stressed the substantial benefits of women’s economic empowerment, not only for families and businesses but also for the nation’s welfare.
This year’s theme, “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment,” emphasized the critical role women play in the business sector. Kiran pointed out that integrating more women into the economy is vital for boosting Fiji’s GDP and driving industrial progress, asserting that “Gender equality is not only a moral obligation but also an economic necessity.” She called for policies that support women entrepreneurs and enhance their participation in the workforce.
To support this initiative, the Fijian government is rolling out policies to improve financial literacy among women and strengthen support for women-owned businesses. Kiran has urged the inclusion of more women in leadership and mentorship roles, fostering the next generation of female leaders.
Nitin Gandhi, Chairperson of the South Pacific Stock Exchange, joined the conversation, advocating for partnerships that focus on training and mentorship to nurture future female leadership. He emphasized that achieving gender equality requires collective effort, including the participation of men as allies.
Patricia Naisara, Head of Human Resources at Westpac Banking Corporation Fiji, also shared the company’s initiatives, notably the “Women of Westpac” advocacy group, which aims to provide mentorship and leadership opportunities for women. She noted that women make up 60% of their workforce, highlighting their increasing representation in leadership positions.
Despite these positive strides, both Kiran and Naisara pointed out the significant underrepresentation of women in decision-making roles, with only 21% of board seats held by women in Fiji. Their remarks reinforce the urgent need for reforms that dismantle barriers and create equitable opportunities for women in leadership.
The ongoing commitment to gender equality not only demonstrates a dedication to social advancement but also offers the potential for enhanced productivity and economic stability in Fiji. As the country continues to cultivate an environment that empowers women, there is hope that these initiatives will lead to meaningful advancements in leadership and economic opportunities for women, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
