As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, we highlight the inspiring journey of Laleena Kumar, a remarkable businesswoman from Tavua, who transitioned from being a domestic housewife to the Director of a successful family business. Her story is one of passion, determination, and commitment to empowering women in business.
Mrs. Kumar’s career in the business sector began after dedicating three years to her family. Balancing the roles of a mother and wife to her four children while assisting her husband, Raven Kumar, in managing Custombilt Sheetmetal Co. Pte. Ltd in Walu Bay, she demonstrated immense dedication and a desire for growth.
Her educational foundation began in Fiji, completing her primary education at Toko Bhartiya, secondary education at Tavua College, and attending computing classes at NZPTC in Suva. After the birth of her third child, Mrs. Kumar embraced the opportunity to join her husband in running their metalwork business. By 2012, her involvement deepened as she became a shareholder and director, managing internal and legal affairs of the company.
Driven by her acquired knowledge, Mrs. Kumar founded her own hardware business, Dispatch and Delivery Pte Ltd, becoming the first businesswoman to operate a hardware company in Fiji. Following the birth of her last child in 2022, she expanded her venture by establishing a supermarket and café, Family Choice Supermarket & Café, which recently opened in Walu Bay, inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica.
Reflecting on her path of entrepreneurship, Mrs. Kumar emphasizes the importance of supporting one another in achieving success. “Success in business or any field isn’t just about reaching the top—it’s about lifting others and sharing your experience with those around you,” she expressed. Her message resonates deeply, especially on this special occasion, as she champions the resilience and brilliance of hardworking women everywhere who contribute to the development of Fiji.
Mrs. Kumar’s journey is parallel to that of other female entrepreneurs in Fiji, such as Loraini Bula, who has successfully balanced her family life while growing her business, Loraini’s Creations. Both women illustrate how determination and community support lead to personal and professional growth.
Their stories are a source of inspiration, encouraging women across Fiji to pursue entrepreneurial adventures, transforming challenges into opportunities. As they rise, they pave the way for future generations to thrive in a supportive and enriched community.
