Empowering Journeys: Celebrating Irinieta Naqolo on International Women’s Day

In this International Women’s Day spotlight, we celebrate the inspiring journey of Irinieta Naqolo, an Assistant Manager – Restaurant at the Sheraton Fiji Resort & Spa, located on Tokoriki Island. Ms. Naqolo’s career in tourism and hospitality began back in 2014 when she started as a waitress at the same resort. Her ambition to rise in the field was deeply rooted in a strong desire to learn and grow.

Coming from a family that values hard work and education, Ms. Naqolo was initially met with some hesitation from her parents when she expressed her aspirations in hospitality. Nonetheless, her mother’s unwavering support encouraged her to pursue her passion. “It’s about leading by example, showing compassion, and building relationships,” she reflects on her leadership philosophy, emphasizing that true leadership lies in empowering others.

Originating from the beautiful island of Somosomo in the Yasawa Group, Ms. Naqolo noted that her journey was not without challenges. She often found herself needing to prove her capabilities in a predominantly male-led industry, stating, “There’s a certain level of expectation placed on you, especially when you’re balancing emotional intelligence with operational tasks.” However, she embraced challenges as opportunities, learning to trust her instincts and remain authentic in her leadership style.

International Women’s Day serves as a moment for Ms. Naqolo not only to celebrate her achievements but also to honor the women who paved the way for her success, especially those from her village. “My mother, my grandmothers, and all the strong women who raised me—these women are my inspiration,” she shared. Her family has always stood by her, supporting her passion for hospitality despite their initial reservations.

One of the defining milestones in her career was receiving the Star of the Year Award in 2019. This recognition was an affirmation of her hard work and dedication, reinforcing her belief in the importance of collective success, stating, “When one of us succeeds, we all succeed.”

Balancing work and personal life in the demanding hospitality sector can be challenging. Ms. Naqolo believes in the significance of setting boundaries to maintain a healthy work-life balance, both for herself and her team. “A rested, happy team is a productive team,” she asserts, underscoring the importance of self-care in achieving professional success.

Her story resonates deeply within the hospitality industry, inspiring many to view their challenges as paths to growth. Ms. Naqolo’s journey exemplifies resilience, empowerment, and the spirit of community, serving as a beacon of hope for future generations of women leaders in hospitality.

In celebrating International Women’s Day, it’s not just about personal victories but recognizing the collective achievements of women across the globe who continuously strive to uplift one another, creating a brighter future for all.
