Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka underscored the importance of supporting the individuals propelling the tourism sector during the 2025 Sustainable Tourism Accelerator Graduation ceremony held in Lautoka. He emphasized that sustainable tourism must be grounded in the empowerment of local entrepreneurs and change makers through initiatives such as the Sustainable Tourism YGAP Accelerator program. This program aims to equip participants with essential tools, knowledge, and mentorship to foster sustainable ventures that create significant social impacts within their communities.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Gavoka highlighted the accelerator program’s success in translating national policy into local action, noting the achievements of this year’s graduates. With 92 percent of participants completing the training and 91 percent successfully launching their businesses, the program is making notable contributions to job creation and community resilience. He attributed these successes to strong partnerships with organizations such as Tourism Fiji, the Duavata Sustainable Tourism Collective, and various private sector stakeholders.

Mr. Gavoka called for continued investment from both public and private sectors in programs that align with Fiji’s broader tourism goals, which emphasize climate action, gender equity, and inclusive growth. The 2025 Accelerator cohort consists of 12 determined entrepreneurs focused on sustainability, cultural preservation, and inclusive growth, which reflects a broader trend in tourism that prioritizes the well-being of both people and the environment.

Previous announcements surrounding Fiji’s tourism initiatives indicate a strong government commitment to sustainable practices that are crucial in fostering economic growth while preserving cultural heritage and environmental integrity. The approach taken by the government not only seeks to uplift local communities but also positions Fiji as a leader in global sustainable tourism efforts.

In this progressive vision, the collaboration among key stakeholders illustrates a pathway for a brighter future, where tourism can thrive sustainably and inclusively across the islands, benefiting all communities involved. This hopeful outlook for the tourism sector showcases the potential for positive change driven by local leaders and innovative entrepreneurs committed to sustainability.
